Homeschool Philosophies

​A homeschool philosophy is a guiding framework that reflects your values, beliefs, and goals regarding your child's education. It shapes the overall approach to teaching and learning in your homeschool environment, influencing curriculum choices, teaching methods, and educational priorities. Homeschool philosophies differ in their various approaches to how subject matter is taught and the types of assessment used.  
 

Having a homeschool philosophy is important because it provides a structured framework for your child’s education, ensuring consistency and coherence in teaching methods and curriculum choices. It helps align the educational approach with your family's values, beliefs, and goals, creating a more personalized and meaningful learning experience. A clear philosophy guides decision-making and keeps the educational journey focused and intentional. It also helps in adapting teaching strategies to your child's unique learning style and needs, promoting more effective and engaging learning. Finally, having a homeschool philosophy can give you confidence and clarity in your homeschooling journey, making it easier to stay committed and motivated.

 

Note: You don't need to know which philosoph(ies) you best align with to begin homeschooling. Start with resources you feel are academically solid, and take time to observe and notice how your family learns (and how you teach) best. You may find that you gravitate toward different home education styles depending on the age(s) of your child(ren) and the number of years that you've been homeschooling. It's quite common for families to try out different philosophies and/or borrow elements from several different philosophies in order to create methodologies that are unique and work for them.
