This resource contains a total of 144 tasks across twelve themed collections, each with twelve hands-on learning tasks designed for students in grades one through six in either a homeschool or school-based setting. Every theme explores a different area of learning, from engineering and art to storytelling, nature, math, and imaginative world building. The tasks are open-ended, playful, and flexible so they can meet the needs and interests of a wide range of learners in any setting.

These challenges can be used throughout the year in whatever rhythm suits your home or classroom. Try choosing two or three tasks each week, offering them as a gentle weekly challenge, or using them for independent choice, or exploration/makerspace time. They also serve as easy, meaningful options for early finishers, quiet indoor days, sick days, or for when learning plans need to shift at the last minute. The tasks are portable and flexible, so they can be tossed in your purse, used outdoors, or taken on vacation to keep kids occupied during downtime, long travel days, or other moments when you need a quiet, engaging activity. Tasks can be adapted to fit the needs of individual children, explained clearly and made simpler for younger children, and/or expanded upon for those who are more advanced. We recommend printing, laminating, and putting the cards on a ring so that children can choose a task whenever they feel ready for a new challenge!

Children can work on these tasks alone, or with a partner/sibling or small group. The goal is to encourage independent thinking, creativity, problem solving, and self-directed learning, so adult involvement should stay light. Your role is simply to offer materials, provide a safe and calm workspace, and let children explore ideas at their own pace.

Most tasks can be completed with simple supplies you likely already have such as paper, recyclables, cardboard, tape, glue, building blocks, nature items, and other basic craft materials. Children should be encouraged to experiment, test ideas, revise their work, and use imagination and trial and error as part of the learning process.

Many tasks include a second step such as writing, reflecting, labeling, sketching, or explaining choices. These small moments of reflection help children to slow down and think about what they created, why it works (or doesn’t), the choices they tried, and what they might do differently next time. These reflective pieces build metacognition and communication skills, while keeping the focus on fun and creativity.

Together, the twelve themes create a year of gentle invitations to explore, invent, question, and build. They support a culture of curiosity and independence where students feel confident to try new things, make mistakes, and discover new ideas all year long.
