  • Do I have to notify my child's previous school that we have decided to homeschool?
After you have registered as a homeschooler, your new homeschool board will take care of the transfer. You do not have to notify your child's old school that you have decided to homeschool, although many people do so as a courtesy.
  • What is blended homeschooling?
Shared Responsibility homeschooling has been referred to as "Blended" in the past. Shared Responsibility is when the homeschool parent shares the teaching load with an Alberta Teacher who teaches between 20-80% of the student course load. Alberta Teachers must legally teach the outcomes found in the Alberta Programs of Study, while homeschool parents may choose to follow either the Alberta Programs of Study OR the Alberta Home Education Regulation outcomes for the portion that they teach.
  • When is the deadline for homeschooling in Alberta?
Spaces are often limited, depending on the school board authority (associate board or associate / independent private school) that you choose, so it's best to register early! If you wish to receive funding from Alberta Education, you must have applied and been accepted BEFORE September 30th (i.e. your acceptance approval must be dated September 29th or earlier). In order to ensure that all paperwork is completed in time, we recommend that you apply early. After September 30th, you may still be able to homeschool if you are able to find a school board authority that will permit registration, but please note that you will not be eligible for funding, and that some boards may require a registration fee. Families are able to register directly with the Alberta Government as as Notification Only homeschooler at any point in the year if they do not wish to receive funding or support from a homeschool board.
  • Is unschooling legal in Alberta?
Absolutely! If you wish to unschool, you should select a school board that supports unschoolers or register as a "Notification Only" homeschooler.
  • Is there any funding available for homeschooling?
Funding is available in Alberta for families who are registered as fully Parent-Directed. Partial funding is available for those who are registered as Shared Responsibility. Families who are fully Teacher-Directed do not receive funding, nor do families who register directly with the Province as "Notification Only" homeschoolers.
  • What is a Learning Plan?
A Home Education Learning Plan is a formal document written by you, the home educator. You will be asked to submit a Learning Plan to your school board (or directly to Alberta Education if you are registering without a board) when you register. This document provides details about what you plan to teach, curricular materials you plan to use, methods you will employ to instruct your child, and ways you will assess their learning. It is a working document and may change through the year. For more information, click here.
