​​A little preparation goes a long way for homeschool days when kids are bored, someone is feeling unwell, or activities are a bust. Although it's hard to plan for these moments, you can do some simple prep now that may save you time and prevent stress down the road. Check out our tips for a proactive approach to help ensure smoother homeschooling days when life doesn’t go according to plan. Creating a Rainy Day Plan How to prepare for bad weather, sick kids and blah days! You're going to have days when kids are bored, someone is feeling unwell, or activities are a bust. Although it's hard to plan for these moments, you can do some simple prep now that may save you time and prevent stress down the road. To begin, go through your home and take inventory (create a list) of all the games and activities that you currently own, as well as ones that you’ve always wanted to do. What board games do you have? Do you have projects or kits that you haven't completed? Make a list of all of the activities that you could do right now, today, without any preparation or planning. This is what Julie Gilbert from Homeschooling-ideas.com calls the Green List in her article entitled, “ Planned Spontaneity ” . Gilbert outlines a simple 3-step process that allows parents to plan activities for homeschoolers whereby she recommends having a Green List of activities that are open-and-go and can be used anytime. Keep this list handy and draw ideas from it as needed. She also recommends having an Amber List of activities that require minimum preparation or set-up by the parent, that could be assembled fairly quickly. As you prepare the items on your Amber List, they can gradually be moved to your Green List. In addition, Gilbert advocates for having a Red List of activities that you would like to do but that require research, specific materials to be purchased, or more intense preparation. As these Red List activities are prepared, they will also gradually shift to the Amber and Green Lists. Having Green/Amber/Red lists of activities to draw from can be extremely helpful during the deschooling process, as well as during the rest of the year on rainy days, when kids get sick, or when kids are just plain uncooperative. You could also c onsider taping a large piece of paper to your wall or fridge where you (and your kids) can write ideas and suggestions for things to do. If you're a tech-person, you may want to try using a visual program like Symbaloo . Symbaloo can help you stay digitally organized by creating themed pages of weblinks that you can quickly find and refer to, as well as websites that you've safely vetted for your kids to use. In addition, you may want to create monthly lists with ideas for activities that you want to do, as well as topics to research and discuss. Include your child(ren) in this process. They may have surprising contributions! Consider seasonal events happening at your favourite local attractions (ex. When our families first started homeschooling, we spent countless hours over many months reading and researching curricula. We read tons of articles and blogs online, ordered books about homeschooling, and joined multiple Facebook groups and forums to get a handle on what others were doing and the types of materials they were recommending. If you’re new to homeschooling, there are a few things you might want to do BEFORE you begin (and especially before you spend any money!). read, Read, READ as MUCH as you Can! There are a LOT of great books about homeschooling (we’ll write an upcoming post about our favourites), but If you have to pick ONE book, start with The Brave Learner by Julie Bogart, and listen to some of the Bravewriter podcasts or watch some of her free videos on YouTube . Julie is a homeschool veteran -- she homeschooled her own 5 children, and she’s pretty insightful and all-around-awesome. We feel like she “gets it” and that she truly understands what home education is all about. Start with Julie. You won’t be disappointed. Start Learning the Jargon When you first start homeschooling, you’ll hear people say things like: “We’re Charlotte Mason homeschoolers,” or “We’re Reggio,” or “We’re Unschoolers.” Although it’s impossible to know ALL of the acronyms for ALL of the homeschool styles and philosophies, you may want to become familiar with some of the main ideologies and methods. Having a general understanding of homeschool philosophies will enable you to more easily understand where you fit in the world of homeschoolers, which may also help you narrow down curricular choices. Your reasons for homeschooling may give you some good hints as to the style(s) that may resonate with you. Remember that you don’t have to subscribe to ANY pedagogy in full (you may find that you'd like to sample a few!) but it's good to know that they exist so that you can research and find materials that suit your family. There are a few websites like this one that give a general overview, but here are a few links to some popular homeschool styles . Pump Up the Volume! If you don’t have time to read, download a few Podcasts or Audiobooks and listen to them while you’re driving (or folding laundry!) The Bravewriter Podcast is a great place to start, but you might also want to try Honey, I’m Homeschooling the Kids or the Home/School/Life Podcast or The Kitchen Table Homeschool Podcast . Take Notes If you haven’t already, start a file folder, notebook or journal to record your findings and thoughts. Use it to write down names of websites, books, authors, philosophies and ideas for learning as you gather information about homeschooling. Fill the book with sticky notes, musings, and brainwaves. Keep a folder on your desktop for downloads, and make use of the bookmarks feature on your browser or consider using Symbaloo or Pinterest to stay organized digitally. Write with Front Desk "Write with Front Desk" by award-winning YA novelist Kelly Yang is an interactive curriculum designed to teach kids writing through engaging lessons and activities. Inspired by Yang's own experiences and her popular "Front Desk " novel series, the program covers literary techniques such as metaphors, similes, and personification. This is a valuable tool for parents and educators looking to enhance children's writing skills with fun and inspiring content. Yang, along with author Kate DiCamillo, also recently launched a new podcast for young writers ages 8+ titled "StoryKind ," which answers student questions, discusses writing tips, and celebrates literacy! The Writing Revolution & The Syntax Project We highly recommend the book The Writing Revolution to anyone teaching writing. While the book provides fantastic resources on their website, supplementary lessons and writing activities for teachers have been compiled on The Syntax Project website. The project's tools provide interactive exercises that align with The Writing Revolution's focus on building strong writing skills through structured practice. By integrating these resources, users can enhance their understanding of grammar and syntax, leading to more effective and coherent writing. Handwriting Resources (Printing/Manuscript and Cursive) ( Listed Alphabetically) There are many free handwriting worksheets online that provide manuscript printing and cursive practice, but they often use conflicting fonts styles and rarely teach proper letter formation. We feel that it’s worth the investment to learn proper technique and to NOT waste time sourcing and printing individual handwriting pages or booklets from the internet. Getty-Dubay Handwriting Success The Italic Handwriting Series from Handwriting Success offers a structured and effective approach to teaching italic handwriting, ideal for homeschool parents. We like that this program offers students the ability to practice forming various-sized letters on specially-lined paper, and that it teaches a slightly different font than other programs, which may be easier for some students to learn. Typing Resources ( Listed Alphabetically) Dance Mat Typing Dance Mat Typing, offered by the BBC, is a fun and interactive typing tutorial designed for kids. The program is structured into four levels with twelve stages, each featuring animated animal characters that guide students through typing exercises. The characters provide visual and auditory instructions, making the learning process engaging and entertaining. Dance Mat Typing is entirely FREE to use and does not require any sign-up or login, making it accessible and easy for young learners. We love this program (although we recommend having headphones handy!) Epistory Epistory is a paid atmospheric adventure game available on several platforms, sometimes offered with free trials or sales. It is aimed at teens and adults who enjoy story rich games and features a papercraft origami world where you play a girl riding a giant fox, controlling everything through the keyboard as you explore, solve puzzles, and battle enemies. Free Training Tutorial This page is a FREE, though somewhat dated-looking, collection of kid friendly typing games from many different websites. It is aimed at younger students and offers simple, colourful games that focus on accuracy and speed in a playful way. KAZ Type KAZ Type Dyslexia Edition is a paid program with online and download options for individuals, families, and schools. It is designed for learners with dyslexia and other special educational needs and features a customizable preference screen for colours, fonts, and layouts to reduce visual stress. The course uses an accelerated, multi sensory method that aims to teach the main letter keys in about 90 minutes while building confidence and reducing cognitive overload. Nessy Fingers Touch Typing Home This version of the popular Nessy platform is a paid subscription program for ages 7 and up, with pricing listed per year and options for home and homeschool use. It is especially aimed at children who struggle with dyslexia, dysgraphia, or ADHD and combines keyboard practice with structured spelling and reading support. Hint: there are often group-buy sites for homeschool families on Facebook! Typesy Typesy is a paid program with a free trial, offered in versions for individuals, schools, and homeschool families. It is aimed at children, teens, and adults and includes full curriculum style lessons, progress tracking, and cloud based access on many devices. It highlights 3D story based lessons, built in video teaching, games, avatars, and detailed reporting for parents and teachers. TypeTastic TypeTastic offers a full K to 12 program that is FREE to use, with optional paid school and district plans that add reporting and management tools. It is aimed at ages 5 to 18 and features over 700 colourful, game based activities sorted by grade level, including timed tests and digital citizenship lessons. Typing.com Typing.com is a comprehensive, FREE platform offering typing lessons, tests, and games for students. It includes customizable lessons, gamified learning, and reporting features that cater to a wide range of skill levels. The site also provides tools for teachers/parents to manage multiple students, track progress, and prepare students for standardized testing. Typing Club TypingClub is FREE for individual learners, with a paid School Edition for classrooms that want extra reporting and management tools. It is aimed at students of all ages, and it stands out for its game style lessons, stars and badges, story based courses, and support for multiple languages. Supplementary Writing Writing Curricula Typing Up

We'll help you focus on the simple resources, tools, and materials that you should have access to as you begin homeschooling. Homeschool Essentials Getting started for the first time? Wondering what supplies you need? Probably fewer than you think! Here's what we suggest. Homeschooling is all about creating a special learning journey for your children, and you don't need a ton of fancy stuff to get started. Don't worry if your homeschool doesn't look like those perfect pictures you see online – those images may be pretty, but they’re unrealistic! What matters most is the love and effort you put into teaching your kids. So, let's focus on the simple resources, tools, and materials that you should have access to as you begin homeschooling! A Place to Sit and Work Having a dedicated spot to work is a good idea. This could be the kitchen table, kitchen island, or a desk. You may find that you slowly gravitate to the couch or the floor, or even outside for certain activities or at particular times of the day, but for “bookwork” (ie. Math or Writing activities) you’ll probably want a solid surface to spread out on. You don’t need special desks or a homeschool room, but if this interests you and is within your budget (and you have the space), go for it! Setting up desks and giving kids creative free-for-all to decorate a small space can go a long way in helping kids mentally prepare for learning at home, and give them a sense of ownership towards homeschooling. It can be helpful if everyone knows where supplies are stored and having books and school materials accessible in one area. Be aware that some of your learning may still be done elsewhere, even if your kids have their own desks. Desks are great for independent work, but tables can be better for collaboration! Library Card Hopefully you’ve already got one of these, but if not, GO GET ONE! While you’re there, check your local library for online subscriptions that you can access from home. Most library consortiums offer free access to apps and websites, as well as interlibrary loan opportunities from other libraries. Remember that you may want to put interlibrary loan books on hold a few weeks ahead of when you’ll likely need them in order to ensure that they arrive in time for you to use them! School Supplies Stock up on School Supplies in the Fall during back-to-school sales and save some of the items for use later in the year. We recommend that you buy a few extra supplies and stash them under the bed (or in your homeschool cupboard!) where your kids won’t find them. Come February, your kids will think you’re a rockstar for giving them new pencil crayons in the middle of the year! Things we use that you might want to have handy: Pencils, erasers, pens, gel pens, felt markers, art pens, highlighters Paper (blank & lined) Notebooks Binders (for you and/or the kids) Folders (to store curriculum and/or kids' work) Glue, tape, glue sticks, ruler Scissors, Extra Scissors & More scissors. (*You can never have enough pairs of scissors! Write your name on them. Hide them where your kids can’t find them. You’ll be glad you did!) Sticky Notes Stapler, staples, paper clips, Art Supplies with Mixed Media paper Craft Supplies Deck of Cards & Dice Calendar and/or Planner Library books for reading aloud together, chosen with your kids' input Computer & Printer Searching for curricular options and information on your phone or tablet can get tiresome, so you may want to invest in a computer at some point. Many curricular choices are available as PDF downloads but if you choose to print yourself, the cost of ink and paper will add up (unless you have a really good printer!) Bookshelf (or Other Storage) Regardless of whether you have a dedicated school room or not, you'll want a shelf or cupboard to keep all of your homeschool materials together. Consider emptying out a kitchen cupboard, making space on an existing shelving unit, or purchasing something to hold your supplies. Support Network and Time for Yourself You can’t be “on” all the time and not burn out. In order to be able to care for others AND teach them, you’re going to need support. Surround yourself with others who “talk homeschool” -- they’ll understand what you’re going through. Be sure to carve out some time on a regular basis for yourself and do something you enjoy! Learning Plan or Road Map No matter what type of homeschool philosophy you subscribe to, you'll want to have some sort of plan. Think about what types of subjects you will cover, areas where you'd like to see growth, and consider your child's interests and abilities. Create a list of objectives for the year, and then break them down into months. Your plan can (and will!) change as you figure out what works for your family, and you'll likely need to make adjustments as you take it week by week, but it's important to have goals to keep you anchored and return to throughout the year.
